What is Burnout?
Burnout has been described by The World Health Organisation (WHO) as an ‘occupational phenomenon’. It is a syndrome that can have multiple physical, emotional and mental symptoms as a result of long term, often stressful and excessively demanding work/life balance.
What Are The Symptoms of Burnout?
Symptoms associated with Burnout include:
- Difficulty concentrating or focusing
- Physical and Mental Exhaustion
- Headaches and Joint Pain
- Insomnia
- Feel detached, overwhelmed, demotivated and hopeless
- Difficulty concentrating
- Irritable, short-tempered, procrastinating
Common Treatments For Burnout
As Burnout is often the result of life circumstances, common advice includes:
- Practicing mindfulness
- Eating healthily
- Find time for exercise, recreation and things you enjoy
- Set clear boundaries against what you can and can’t do, especially in the workplace
Can I Recover From Burnout?
Burnout is often the result of multiple factors. Understanding and recognising these factors and how to deal with them in a way that prevents symptoms being triggered is possible.
